Emergency service at the animal hospital
In the event of an emergency, please call us prior to your arrival. Thank you for your understanding.
What do you need to know?
The emergency service of the University Animal Hospital is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The emergency service is available to both patients referred by veterinarians and non-referred patients with acute, serious illnesses.
Our emergency service is aimed at pet owners in the following situations:
- Accident or acute serious illness of your pet outside the opening hours of your regular veterinary practice (weekend; overnight; public holidays)
- Your pet falls ill or has an accident that is so serious that your regular veterinary practice cannot (any longer) help you.
Our emergency service is aimed at pet owners in the following situations:
- Accident or acute serious illness of your animal outside your regular veterinary clinic’s opening hours (weekend; overnight; public holidays).
- Your animal falls ill or has a serious accident that your regular veterinary clinic cannot (or can no longer) help you with.
- Call our emergency number and register (see top of this page). Note the different numbers for small animals (dogs, cats, rodents, birds and reptiles), horses and farm animals.
- If the numbers are busy, you can set off and try again on route. However, it is very important for us that you register.
- Go straight to the University Animal Hospital. You will find our address at the bottom of every page. See our contact page for directions if you are travelling by car or public transport.
- Please note that the reception for small animals (dogs and cats) is in a different location to the reception for horses and farm animals. You will also find signposts on the site.
- Please report to the relevant reception or register using the service phone as soon as you arrive.
- Please note the information on waiting times for emergency services and triage (next point).
- Emergencies involving horses and farm animals: in the event of an emergency, we recommend an initial consultation with your own veterinarian. Although we naturally accept patients that are brought directly to us, we generally prefer if this is not the case as animals often need to be stabilised first and in an emergency a veterinarian will need to assess whether they are fit to be transported.
Please note that you may have to wait for the emergency service as the workload cannot be planned. If several emergencies arrive at the same time, treatment will be prioritised according to medical urgency. We thank you for your understanding.
- Your pet will receive primary care and be stabilised in the emergency medicine section. The focus is on life-saving measures. Full diagnostic tests are usually carried out at a later date in consultation with you.
- If your pet remains with us as an emergency patient, we will provide you with an update by telephone every day by late afternoon or by appointment. If there is a sudden deterioration in your pet’s health, we will contact you immediately. We ask that you be contactable by telephone.
Small and large animal receptions
Please note that the reception for small animals (dogs, cats, rodents, birds and reptiles) is in a different location to the reception for large animals (equine and farm animals).
There is a car park by the large animal reception for vehicles with trailers.
