The University Animal Hospital Zurich has maintained a blood bank for dogs for several years, requiring approximately 200 transfusions annually for accident victims and critically ill animals. Would you like to volunteer your dog for blood donation?

The procedure

Dogs have different blood types than humans, with no ABO system. Dogs typically do not develop antibodies against foreign blood until after the first exposure, so the first transfusion is rarely problematic. However, due to the variety of blood groups, exact matches are rare, and repeated transfusions can trigger incompatibility reactions. We test all donors for the blood group (DEA 1.1.) most likely to be recognised as foreign. The collection process is sterile, requiring a minimum weight of 23 kg to donate 450 ml. Blood collection takes about 5-10 minutes, and it is important that the dog remains calm during the procedure.

Die Voraussetzungen:

  • Er ist gesund: Ihr Eindruck als Besitzer ist wichtig, wir untersuchen den Spender klinisch und labortechnisch und schliessen übertragbare Infektionskrankheiten aus.
  • Er wiegt mindestens 23 kg, damit er ohne Risiko 450 ml spenden kann.
  • Der Hund ist von 1 bis 7 Jahre alt (beim ersten Mal).
  • Er hat keine Angst beim Tierarzt und ist kooperativ: der Hund kommt nicht aus eigenem Solidaritätsbewusstsein sondern unfreiwillig und wir halten es für wichtig, dass er die Blutentnahme ohne Stress und Angst übersteht. Die Spender werden für die Entnahme nie medikamentell beruhigt.
  • Sie sollten 3 bis 4 Mal pro Jahr mit ihrem Hund zum Spenden ans Tierspital kommen können.

Requirements:

  • Healthy: Your observation as an owner is crucial, and we will conduct a clinical and laboratory examination.
  • Weighs at least 23 kg.
  • Aged 1 to 7 years at the first donation.
  • Calm and cooperative: The dog should undergo blood collection without stress. Sedation is not used.
  • Able to visit the hospital 3 to 4 times a year.

Contact us to schedule an initial appointment for a thorough examination and blood tests. Once we have the results, we will arrange the first donation. You will receive a donor card.
