Pain management for hip dysplasia
Hip dysplasia is common in older dogs, and we understand the distress it can cause. At the University Animal Hospital, we offer an innovative pain management method (pericapsular hip desensitisation) specifically designed to treat chronic hip pain.

Professional care
Our experienced team uses the latest ultrasound equipment and techniques to provide significant pain relief, potentially lasting up to eight months.
What is the PHD Block?
The PHD Block (pericapsular hip desensitisation) is a technique that targets nerves supplying the hip joint, offering prolonged pain relief. It is particularly beneficial for pets suffering from chronic hip pain due to conditions like hip dysplasia.
Eligibility and procedure
A prior examination, including a blood test and radiographic diagnosis of hip dysplasia, is required. The PHD block is available for dogs over eight kilograms. The procedure is performed under short anaesthesia, and your dog can go home the same day.
