Residency in Veterinary Ophthalmology

01.11.2027

The Vetsuisse Faculty of the University of Zürich invites applications from qualified individuals for a three-or four-year residency training program in Veterinary Ophthalmology. The program is scheduled to begin on November 1st, 2027.

Aufgaben

 Prerequisites for Acceptance

  1. A DVM degree (or equivalent) from an EAEVE-approved veterinary school. Recognition possibilities of a medical degree from an EU/EFTA state or the United Kingdom to work in in Switzerland shall be verified under the BAG website https://www.bag.admin.ch/bag/de/home/berufe-im-gesundheitswesen/auslaendische-abschluessegesundheitsberufe/diplome-der-medizinalberufe-ausserhalb-eu-efta.html
Prior to final selection, the candidate must provide official proof of eligibility to legally work and practice veterinary medicine in Switzerland by the program’s start date.
    a. Important Note for Non-EU/EFTA (Third-State) Applicants: The recognition process for veterinary degrees obtained outside of the EU/EFTA/UK is highly restrictive, complex, and typically takes several months to over a year to process. In most cases, a direct recognition is not possible for residency timelines unless a legal exception applies, for more information please check the website: https://www.bag.admin.ch/de/gesuch-einreichen-fuer-ein-diplom-der-medizinalberufe-aus-einem-drittstaat-nicht-eu-efta-staat
    b. Applicants with third-state degrees are strongly advised to check their eligibility before applying via the official Swiss Federal Office of Public Health portal
  2. Completion of a one-year rotating internship OR a minimum of two years of private practice post-DVM (or equivalent clinical training).
  3. Completion of a one-year ophthalmology internship is ideal, but not required
  4. A fair to good command of the German language is preferred, though not strictly imperative at the start of the program.

Wir bieten

We Offer
A comprehensive, European College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ECVO) conforming, structured residency program supported by four board-certified ophthalmologists:

  • Prof. Simon Pot (ECVO/ACVO Diplomate)
  • Dr. Antonella Rampazzo (ECVO Diplomate)
  • Dr. Anja Suter (ECVO Diplomate)
  • Prof. Richard McMullen (ECVO/ACVO Diplomate, Equine Ophthalmology)

This includes the responsibility for hospital patients and training in the medical and surgical aspects of veterinary ophthalmology, including large and small domestic animals, non-domestic and exotic animals. Our team of four ECVO/ACVO Diplomates, two ECVO/ACVO residents, one ophthalmology intern, one ophthalmology clinician and two dedicated ophthalmology technicians has the pleasure to work in a spacious and modern animal clinic with all the diagnostic and surgical equipment necessary for excellent training opportunities and state-of-the-art veterinary care. Secondary residency objectives are to introduce the resident to basic scientific and/or clinical ophthalmic research and to develop effective clinical and didactic teaching skills. The resident will therefore assist in the instruction of veterinary medical students, interns and other residents. The responsibility for our ophthalmology emergency duty is shared with the other ophthalmology residents/intern. Weekly rounds for review of the veterinary and human ophthalmic literature, bi-weekly ocular pathology reviews attended by the ophthalmology faculty and board-certified pathologists, and wet labs are provided. Presentations at in-house rounds and seminars and at the ECVO meeting are required and attendance at the ACVO Basic Science Course is ensured. The resident is required to complete a research project and have two written manuscripts accepted for publication in a peer reviewed journal prior to completion of the residency.
