We are one of the most modern veterinary cancer treatment facilities in Europe. To treat cancer in animals, we use many of the methods available in human medicine, including radiotherapy, chemotherapy and surgery. We are one of the few veterinary institutions able to offer innovative treatments such as intensity modulated radiotherapy in all its facets (SRT, VMAT, etc.).

Research

In the treatment of animal patients with spontaneously occurring tumors, we
contribute to expanding the complex knowledge about cancer.

I study the effects of radiotherapy on tumors and surrounding normal tissue. I am particularly interested in understanding how we can use the classical rules of radiotherapy to treat tumors while protecting patients as much as possible from
side effects.

Funding

Recent funding sources for my work include grants from the Swiss National Science Foundation, SNSF 320030_182490, "Challenging traditional radiation dose homo-geneity: using normal tissue tolerance for heterogeneous dose escalation and better tumor control" (PI); the Swiss Cancer League, KFS-4438-02-2018, "Phase III clinical trial: therapeutic efficacy of FLASH-RT in domestic cats with superficial carcinoma
of the nasal planum" (Co-PI, PI: Dr Marie-Catherine Vozenin; Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois (CHUV)); the Albert Heim Foundation, AHS 145, "Challenging
the standard therapy for meningoencephalomyelitis of unknown origin (MUO): can we make treatment easier for our patients? “ (together with Prof. Frank Steffen, Neurology)

Training

After my studies and dissertation at the University of Bern, I completed my training
as an American certified radiation oncologist (DACVR-RO) at the Vetsuisse Faculty
in Zurich. For almost 4 years I worked as a post-doc in cancer research, under
Prof. Martin Pruschy in the Laboratory for Molecular Radiobiology at the University Hospital Zurich. Since 2015 I am Professor of Radio-Oncology and since 2007 Head
of Oncology / Radio-Oncology at the University Animal Hospital of the Vetsuisse
Faculty Zurich.

Teaching

I teach the students of both Vetsuisse faculties, Zurich and Bern.

In autumn 2020 I will teach the course "general oncology" for students of veterinary medicine in the 4th year (all specialties).

In spring 2021 I will teach the special oncology course (focus on small animals)
and for the first year veterinary students I will hold the colloquium "radiobiology and radiation protection".

During the whole year, my team and I will supervise the students of clinical rotations
of the 5th year in clinical work.

Furthermore, I continuously train doctoral students, junior clinicians and residents
in oncology and radiation oncology.
